Sometimes, you may be interested in a date, but you just may not feel like going out. Some days, you just want to stay in, watch a movie, and be alone with yourself. It may get hard to get out of date if you’ve promised one, and it may hurt the other person’s feelings making them think that you do not want to be with them, or that they are not as important to you as they thought . In such cases, you need to tackle the situation very carefully and technically. Here are a few ways you can get out of a date without hurting the other person.
10. Duty calls
Tell them that something unexpected has come up at work and you have to go deal with it immediately. If the other person cares about their career and job, they would understand. If they don’t get convinced, once in a while, play the “if I don’t go I will get fired” card. But don’t make it sound too unrealistic. If you play the same card every time, your date would start wondering whether you’re putting up with this job because you’re a coward.
This one usually makes you feel guilty, but hypothetically kill someone, and say that you have to cancel the date to attend the funeral. Don’t ever play the “my grandmother passed away” card because there are only so many grandmothers that you can hypothetically kill. Keep it to a “family friend” usually. It’s safer, and it saves the guilt.
8. Family emergency
This is the most classic excuse in the book. Since family is a very personal matter, you would not even have to explain the intricate details of the nature of the emergency. Keeping things less precise can help you change the facts a bit as well later.
Say that you’re sick in bed with a bad stomach ache, a headache, a fever or some other illness. Tell them that you’ve taken medicines and most of them were sedatives do you’d really want to get some sleep and take some rest.
6. The flu
If you’re ill, chances are that your date would show up at your place to take care of you. To avoid that, say you believe you’re coming down with flu, and you think it’s viral and contagious so you don’t want to infect your date. Make it clear how much you’re rather be spending time with them if it weren’t for their own safety.
5. Double booked
Apologize and say you’re sorry you didn’t realize you were double-booked. Make sure you point out that you can’t get out of the other commitment because you made that one before agreeing to this date and it has completely slipped your mind. Also assure the person that you’ll make it up to them.
4. Unannounced guests
Tell your date regretfully that unannounced guests have shown up at your place, and that you feel awful about having to cancel the date but naturally you can’t throw the guests out and that you really should entertain them hospitably for now, and suggest another time for the date.
Say you were in an accident and need to go to the hospital. Make sure you say you’re alright or they’ll show up at your door or at the hospital. Say that your friend is injured and you need to tend to them or that your car took all the damage and you need to tend to that.
2. Rain check
Ask for a raincheck. Say you cannot explain right now but will explain later when you meet up again. Ask them to try to understand that you’re in a sticky position. The imprecision makes sure that your options are open and if you get caught by your date while you’re out doing whatever you actually wanted to do, you can easily adjust the situation appropriate excuse in that.
1. The truth
The best excuse that you can ever possibly make, is make no excuse. Just tell the truth. Be honest as to why you’d rather cancel the date. It will save you from a lot more lies, even if the truth is hard to speak at times.
